Healthy Barbecue Tips

This is the perfect time of the year for a barbecue, and making healthy choices doesn’t mean sacrificing delicious food. Here are some tips to have a fun, healthy barbecue!

Get creative.

Burgers and hot dogs are great, but getting creative at the grill can make your barbecue one to remember. For example, you could try making skewers with chicken, onions, tomatoes, and peppers. The flavors will go great together, and it’ll be a fun variation on traditional barbecue food.

Another way to get creative at your barbecue is putting some fresh vegetables on the grill. A lot of veggies are delicious once they’re grilled, including corn on the cob, asparagus, mushrooms, eggplant, and peppers. Brushing them with a little olive oil will help keep them from sticking to the grill, and some fresh herbs will add a little extra flavor!

Choose lean meats.

Protein plays a big role at most barbecues, which is great news for anyone following the Better Body System. Just make sure you’re choosing lean meats! Chicken, turkey, and fish are all great options. If you prefer red meat, pick a lean, high-quality cut.

Consider your side dishes.

Side dishes are the perfect way to round out your meal, but choose carefully! Heavy dishes such as potato salad and coleslaw are often packed with fat, sodium, and added sugars. Instead, fill up on fruits and vegetables. They’re delicious, and they’ll offer more nutritional value than less healthy options.

Exercise portion control.

The occasional indulgence won’t derail your healthy lifestyle, so if you just can’t say no to your favorite barbecue snack or something from the dessert table, that’s okay! As long as you feel confident that you can enjoy a less healthy option and then get back on track, go for it. Pick something that you really like and take a small portion. That will give you the chance to enjoy one of your favorites without overdoing it.
